Welcome back to Blogging Up, where we explore the wisdom, the wonder, and sometimes the mysteries of spirituality on our own terms. This week, we’re diving into one of the most powerful and transformative ideas in spiritual teachings: the Kingdom of God—and how Jesus’ words invite us to see it not as a distant promise, but as a present reality within us.
The Kingdom Within
One of the most striking and empowering teachings of Jesus appears in the Gospel of Luke:
"The Kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed... For behold, the Kingdom of God is within you." (Luke 17:20-21)
This idea is revolutionary. It shifts the focus of spirituality from external rituals, institutions, or far-off heavens to an inward journey of discovery. Jesus is saying that the divine—what we seek, what we yearn for—is already here, within us. It’s not something to be earned or granted by others. It is inherent in our identity.
This message is both liberating and challenging. It asks us to stop looking outward for answers or validation and instead turn inward to explore our own hearts, minds, and souls. The Kingdom isn’t a place we need to find; it’s a reality we need to awaken to.
What Does It Mean to Be the Kingdom?
When Jesus says the Kingdom of God is within us, he’s inviting us to see ourselves as active participants in the divine flow of life. This isn’t just about feeling good or achieving personal peace—it’s about recognizing that each of us carries the power to embody love, compassion, and divine connection in our everyday lives.
To "be the Kingdom" means:
Living with Purpose: Aligning your actions with your values and understanding that every choice you make has the potential to reflect divine love.
Seeing the Sacred in Others: Acknowledging the divine not only within yourself but in everyone you encounter, even in the most unexpected places.
Taking Responsibility: Understanding that the transformation of the world begins with the transformation of ourselves. When we bring love, forgiveness, and authenticity into our lives, we invite others to do the same.
A Message of Empowerment
For centuries, much of organized religion has framed spirituality as something external—something mediated by priests, rituals, or institutions. But Jesus’ teachings challenge this narrative. He shows us that spirituality is personal, direct, and accessible to all.
Take, for example, his words in the Gospel of John:
"Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these." (John 14:12)
This is a radical statement. Jesus isn’t placing himself on a pedestal to be worshiped from afar. Instead, he’s inviting us to step into our own divine potential. He’s saying, “You are capable. You are enough. You are the Kingdom.”
How Do We Awaken to the Kingdom?
If the Kingdom of God is within us, how do we connect with it? How do we live as the Kingdom in our daily lives? Here are some practical steps to consider:
Practice Self-Awareness: Spend time in reflection or meditation. Ask yourself, “What is within me that I need to bring forth?” This might be love, forgiveness, creativity, or simply the courage to be authentic.
Live with Intention: Approach each day with the mindset that your actions matter. How can you bring more kindness, patience, or understanding into your interactions?
Recognize the Divine in Others: When you’re tempted to judge or dismiss someone, pause. Remember that they, too, carry the spark of the divine. How might this perspective change the way you treat them?
Let Go of External Validation: True spiritual empowerment comes from within. While community, rituals, and traditions can guide us, they are not the source of our divine connection. Trust yourself.
Embrace Service: One of the most powerful ways to live as the Kingdom is through acts of service. Helping others, whether through small gestures or larger commitments, brings the divine into the world in tangible ways.
Reflections for the Week
As you move through this week, I invite you to reflect on these questions:
Where in your life do you feel disconnected from your inner divine spark? What might help you reconnect?
In what ways are you already living as the Kingdom? How can you lean into that more fully?
How might your relationships change if you truly saw the divine in everyone you encountered?
Your Invitation
Jesus’ teachings about the Kingdom of God are not just ancient words—they are an invitation for us today. They call us to step into our power, to see ourselves as integral parts of the divine story, and to live in a way that reflects the sacred truth that we are the Kingdom.
Let’s continue the conversation in the comments. What does it mean to you to live as the Kingdom? How do you see this idea shaping your spiritual journey? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Until next week, keep exploring, keep growing, and remember: the divine is already within you—waiting to be awakened.
